Why Do We Invite the the Enemy to Our Table?
When we sit down to eat, we often think only of filling our stomachs. But Scripture reminds us that the enemy comes “to steal, kill, and destroy” (John 10:10). One of the subtle ways he works is through our daily choices—especially the ones we make at the table. Without realizing it, we may be inviting the devil himself to join us.
The Trap of Temptation on Our Plates
When we choose foods loaded with sugar and unhealthy carbohydrates, we’re not just indulging in a sweet treat—we’re opening the door to cravings, sluggishness, and discouragement. These foods spike our blood sugar, then send it crashing, leaving us vulnerable to frustration and poor decisions. In those moments of weakness, the enemy whispers lies: “You’ve already messed up—why bother trying?”
This cycle is how we invite defeat into our healthy living journey. By making room for the wrong foods, we make room for the wrong voice.
The ALIVE in Christ Way
That’s why we return to the ALIVE in Christ framework—living Abundantly, with Life, Intention, Vitality, and Energy in Christ.
Abundantly: God has given us the gift of nourishment to live full, purposeful lives—not lives weighed down by guilt or fatigue.
Life: Choosing life-giving foods means fueling our bodies with God’s creation—whole, vibrant foods that bring strength.
Intention: We must be intentional with our choices. Just as we prepare our hearts for prayer, we can prepare our kitchens for success.
Vitality: Our vitality in Christ comes when we care for our bodies as His temple. We don’t settle for shortcuts that rob us of health.
Energy: True, sustained energy is a blessing when we align our meals with wisdom, not whim.
Keeping the Enemy Away from the Table
If we don’t want to invite the enemy to our table, we need to stop leaving a seat open for him. That means:
Pre-planning meals: When we prepare ahead of time, we shut down impulsive choices that lead to regret.
Staying hydrated: Often, what feels like hunger is really thirst. Water refreshes not only the body, but also clears the mind.
Getting quality sleep: Lack of rest magnifies cravings and weakens resolve. Rest is a spiritual discipline that equips us to resist temptation.
By aligning our habits with the ALIVE in Christ framework, we walk in freedom rather than bondage.
A Closing Encouragement
The table can be a place of defeat—or a place of victory. Each meal is a chance to choose life, honor God, and strengthen the body He has given us. Let’s guard our plates, our hearts, and our homes. Don’t invite the enemy to your table. Instead, invite Christ, the true Bread of Life, to nourish your body, mind, and spirit.
